Introductionto the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (formerly known as Department of Petroleum Refining, Department of Petrochemical Engineering) was founded in 1960, one of the four central departments established in the early stage of the university. There are currently five majors of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Applied Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer Materials, and Engineering.

The school began to enroll undergraduates in 1961 and was granted the first batch of master's degree awarding right in 1981 and doctor's degree-awarding right in 2010. In 2017, Grade B (Top 30%) was awarded in the fourth round of national discipline evaluation. In 2020 and 2021, two majors of Chemical Engineering and Technology and Applied Chemistry were successively selected as the national first-class undergraduate program construction sites.

The school has 106 faculty members, including 28 professors, 45 associate professors, 23 doctoral supervisors, and 73% of the faculty with doctoral degrees. Currently, a professional team of high-quality talents is constituted of one dual-employed academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) as the captain, full-time employed national overseas high-level professionals, Distinguished Young Scholars of National Science Foundation of China (NSFC), and Longjiang Scholars of high-level provincial professionals as the main body, and top-notch youth professionals as the reserve. Relying on the research platforms of Key Laboratory of Oil & Gas Chemical Technology in Heilongjiang Province, Key Laboratory of Energy Conversion and Utilization Technology of China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, and International Joint Laboratory of Advanced Chemical Catalytic Materials and Surface Science. Focusing on the critical strategic needs of both the country and Heilongjiang province, some remarkable research achievements have been made in petrochemistry and oilfield chemistry.

The school has a total enrollment of 1742 full-time students, including 1420 undergraduates, 253 master candidates, and 69 doctorate candidates. The school always insists on teaching as the center and attaches importance to cultivating students' comprehensive quality. More than 100 awards have been won in various contests such as National Chemical Engineering Design Contest and National Polymer Material Contest. The school has established cooperative relations with many famous universities in the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, Canada, and other countries. More than 30 teachers and students have gone abroad for research visits and further studies in recent years.
